Reality Check, Becoming your own Boss

OK you have made the decision to become your own boss, what now? I would not pack up your office just yet and tell your boss to take a hike, not yet anyway. In my last article I told you to read every article you can fine. There is so much advertisement on placing your site within the reach of the big search engines. It's a little overwhelming. Believe me the temptation will be there to start spending money right out of the gate. Stop!!!
Let's face it; most of us do not have a large cash flow that we can spend on marketing. Once you make the decision to put your hard work into your business take the time to make a plan. A plan!!! No one wants to make a plan; we are an instance gratification world. We want to push a button, click on a link and presto our business is up and running it's the internet after all.

Well just like in the traditional brick and mortar retail world you need a plan. A good rule of thumb is, would anyone lend you money for your business? Step back for a moment and put the emotional passion you now have for your business and step into the board room, You are sitting before your CEO (spouse) and say I am spending 300 dollars marketing to place me out on Google's first page.

Did I mention how excited you are; after all it's your business. Your conversation with your CEO (spouse) is informational only. You did not think for a moment you need permission to spend capital dollars. Than the hard question comes, what is the Return on investment (ROI). I can hear the brakes locking up all the way to my house. It's like some just threw a cold bucket of water on you. Your dream seems like it is starting to fade. Denial sets in; clearly my CEO (spouse) doesn't share my vision.

By this time you had a pretty good idea on what you want to sell but that's it. Believe me if you don't make a plan your business will come to end as soon as your CEO (spouse) takes your credit card away. It can be a simple plan, set goals and expectations. What do you need to do a week from now? What do you need to do a month from now? Most importantly how much ROI will you be making after you investment. Remember every claims that they can increase your site traffic and have you on Google's first page in 48 hours. Reality check, you may be there but are people spending any money?
